Things to Do
Hochatown (link) is at the heart of the Broken Bow Lake area, approximately 8 miles North of the city of Broken Bow, Oklahoma on Highway 259. There are a variety of restaurants (see drop down below), I highly recommend Abendigos, Shuck Me and Mt Fork Brewery. For children the Petting Zoo Wildlife Rescue Center, Old West Town Mini Golf and Beavers Bend Mining Co. are side by side on Highway 259, along with a host of other fun kid friendly options here including the very popular Hochatown Maze just north of town.
Beavers Bend State Park (link for parking pass) on the south side of Broken Bow Lake is where the Mountain Fork River winds through the hills with easy going canoeing, and many hiking trails from level and easy along the river to more difficult trails among the hills. Highway 259a takes you there, making a spectacular 10 mile loop starting about 5 miles north of the city of Broken Bow and ending back onto highway 259 further north in Hochatown.
In the middle of Beavers Bend is The Forest Heritage Center And Museum (link). I highly recommend checking it out, you can pick up free trail maps there, and one of the trails starts right at the parking lot! There are several places of business in Beavers Bend, such as gift shops, the Beavers Bend Fly Shop, paddle boat rentals, canoe rentals, restaurants and a country store, also the Nature Center (linkk).
The Kiamichi Owa-Chito Festival of the Forest is an annual spring event at Beavers Bend State Park, and in the fall the Beavers Bend Folk Festival & Craft Show (link) hosted by the Forest Heritage Museum is one of Oklahoma’s most popular autumn events.
The Beavers Bend area along the shores of Broken Bow Lake (on maps it’s called Hochatown State Park) is reached mainly by driving down one of three roads:
Stevens Gap Road, which starts by Abendigos restaurant, takes you to Broken Bow Lake and the Marina, also Rugaru Adventures Ziplining, boat ramps and picnic/swim areas; and to Eagle Drive which has the best lake views.
Carson Creek Road on the North side of Hochatown also has boat ramps and picnic/swimming areas, and is a quieter part of the lake.
Golf Course Road is almost 2 miles north of Hochatown and has a recently upgraded 18 hole golf course on Broken Bow Lake with pro shop, practice range and putting green.
The Ouachita National Forest has multiple entry point roads off highway 259 starting immediately North of Hochatown. The main and nicest road to drive through the forest with a regular street vehical is about 4.5 miles north of Hochatown, named on Google maps 51000/Cedar Creek Trail, but in real life the road sign says 53000. This is where many will park their trucks and trailers to off load their trail riding vehicles. There are also many old logging roads branching off 53000 that are off-limits to motor vehicals, which makes for excellant hiking – stick to well worn trails to avoid ticks and chiggers, and use insect repellant. My favorite non toxic repellant is Cedarcide Original.
